It’s hard to find time to practice you golf game when life gets in the way. And the million dollar question is, even if you can find the time to practice golf are you sure the practicing the correct things to improve your golf game?

Here are a few golf tips to help you make the most of your time at the driving range.

1) Identify Your Weaknesses and Practice That Aspect Of your Game. One of the biggest mistakes golfers make when practicing – is that they practice what they are good at. I’m guilty of this myself and it’s easy to understand. When I’m pounding the ball off of the tee, but putting poorly — It’s much more fun to drive a bucket of balls off of the golf mats, strike a pose and watch the ball sail a few hundred yards rather than head down to the putting green and get depressed missing a pile of four-footers.

2) Now that you have determined what it if that you want to practice you have to you need to determine practice drills that will help. I also like to come up with goals that indicate success. For example I’ll pledge not to leave the practice green until I make 8 out of ten putts from without leaving a putt short. This is where professional golf instruction will pay off – have your golf pro give you specific drills to work on during your practice session and keep a golf practice journal to chart your progress as well as struggles. One of the worst things you can do is practice in ignorance – you could actually be practicing and reinforcing your swing faults.

If your trying not to sway or dip or slide – ask for some feedback or get some other training aids that will tell you the truth.

6) Practice slowly and deliberately on the driving range. If your in full swing mode for example go through your whole routine – pre shot, address, practice swing, and swing. And then evaluate each shot and try and pick-up and flaws in your swing. The Same goes for putting drills on the practice green – approach each shot like it’s the real deal. This will increase your consistency dramatically when it’s time to take it to the course.

7) Journal – Journal – Journal – Journal your practice sessions and rounds played. Track fairways, greens in regulation, and putts at a minimum. And remember to practice the weak areas of your game. You may not see a drop in your scores right away, but stay with and I guarantee you will. A good positive measure is to to track your good holes for example how many pars, birdies, and bogies (depending on your handicap) did you get. If you better your good scores, your big numbers will also drop and you’ll start seeing better scores.

Want to Feel Calm and Confident on the Golf Course? Stay in the Present and Practice Correctly

If you go and stand at any driving range or golf practice area you are going to be witnessing something very strange, even if you’ve never realized it before. You will see hundreds, and if you keep going back, thousands of golfers practicing to “improve my golf” in ways that bear no resemblance to play on the actual golf course.

If it was a cooking class you were watching, they would be practicing to bake a cake without following the recipe and using the wrong ingredients. What’s the use of practicing something that bears no resemblance of what it is you are trying to achieve?

There are many aspects of the average golf practice which are very poorly done and we will not be discussing them all but here is a generalized overview of some good effective practice. You should develop a “whole game” practice system with your local professional and many good things have been written about effective practice if you browse the top golf books.

Firstly, have a specific plan. If you need to work on your short game, take only those clubs you need to practice so you are not tempted to get the big dog out and beat the cover off the ball in a meaningless and destructive manner. And by the way, you should spend 80% of your time practicing the short game if you want to play your best on any given day.

Spend most of your time practicing areas you know you need to practice. Don’t get sucked into hitting most of your practice balls with your favourite club. This happens all too often, but remember that it is not your favourite club that costs you the most shots on the golf course. Decide which shot is troublesome, develop an effective practice plan – with the help of a professional preferably – and then be disciplined and stick to the practice.

If you need to practice your driver pick specific targets left and right that would be the fairway edges and then practice hitting your drives down your imaginary fairway, while following your entire pre Shot routine on every shot.

Always target each shot to a very specific spot. NEVER hit balls generally “down the range” one after another, which I call “play and spray” golf. Pick a spot you want the ball to finish and focus all your attention on sending the ball there. You should as a general rule never hit the same shot twice in a row, as you would not do this on the course. Hit to different targets and if you are practicing a range of clubs, keep swapping them for each shot.

It is very important to make sure you take your time and give each shot your full attention and follow your Pre shot Routine religiously for every swing. This will ensure that you are practicing like you intend to play so that when you get on the golf course, it feels familiar and becomes comforting mentally. Your brain will begin associating your calm practice (I hope you remain calm in practice?) with calm play on the course.

If you practice ball beating remember that you are not practicing golf the way you play it so when you get on the course you are going to have little or no calming effect resulting from effective practice. By playing one shot at a time in the practice environment, giving it your fully focused Pre-shot Routine every time, you will very quickly start feeling calmer on the golf course. This is because your system (unconscious golf mind) will start to associate the calmer, less pressurizer situation in practice with what you are doing on the course. But if you don’t practice as if you are on the course, don’t expect to get very much from your hours and dollars spent.

You must practice like you want to play. If you want to play focused and calm, playing one shot at a time and remaining in the present for each shot, then this is exactly what you need to do in your practice, other-wise it will not happen on the course.

Effective practice is a discipline and an art that should be intrinsically linked to play on the course. How to Improve Your Golf Performance With Deliberate Practice

I bet you would love to know why the majority of golfers playing this great game aren’t improving in-line with improvements in golf club and golf ball technology. How is it that we humans, as capable as we are, can’t seem to swing a golf club in such a way that the end result is lower golf scores? Over the past few years many golf books and golf magazines have been asking similar questions, and the results of these articles and discussions tend to point to problems in these five areas.

There is an enormous amount of literature dedicated to the first and second areas, and in particular, golf swing technique. In my golf library I have golf instruction books that go back more than one hundred years which describe in detail how to swing the golf club; and yet to this day something seems to be missing from the equation. In this article I will shed some light on what it is and more importantly what you can do about it.

Dr Karl Anders Ericsson of the University of Miami has spent the past twenty five years looking into how our culture has always recognized outstanding individuals, whose performance in sports, science and the arts is greatly superior to that of the rest of the population.

Dr Ericsson’s work focused on the differences between expert performers and everyone else. He discovered that one primary distinction between expert performers and the rest of us is a day to day dedication to the deliberate effort to improve their performance in a specific domain or field of expertise.

Practicing in a highly deliberate way is a very demanding activity that requires that our attention be completely and specifically focused whilst we’re honing our skills. I believe that this is the missing factor in golf performance improvement.

Here are three excellent questions to ask yourself prior to practicing your golf in a deliberate way.

What exactly do I need to practice to improve?

To determine exactly what you need to practice I suggest that you pay close attention to your results over the next five rounds of golf you play. Look for particular weaknesses in your skills that lead to higher score averages. The skills that I find most golfers need to work more on are the chipping, pitching, sand and putting skills. I’m sure you realise that more than sixty four percent of your score is played from within sixty yards of the green so it makes good sense to identify the skills that would make the most difference to your score.

You will more than likely identify more than one weak skill area, so rate each skill based on its relationship to your score goal, and practice the skills in order of most important skill to the least important. You will find that you increase your scoring potential by developing all your weak skills during your practice sessions, which will develop an increased capability for a wider range of expertise on the golf course.

Exactly how should I practice this skill to improve?

Here’s a new rule to apply to your practice sessions from now on. Design to improve. Every time you go to practice your golf skills, begin by designing a program that would lead you towards improvement in your skills, and ultimately your scores. Your golf skill practice should be programmed, understandable and focused which will reduce boredom and the opportunity to procrastinate. If you’re working on your full swing mechanics, concentrate on executing each and every stroke in an excellent way. Do not get slack with your work, practice on the very edge of your current capability. Boring repetition is based upon a foundation of goal-less and mindless duplication. Deliberate practice is exactly the opposite; deliberate practice is consistent directed effort that leads to improved performance.

What resources and attributes do I need to help me to practice correctly to improve?

I’ve never known anybody who improved their golf game, or anything else for that matter that didn’t begin with the passion to improve. Yes it’s nice to have a first class facility to develop your skills, but it matters little compared to a strong desire for self improvement. If deliberate practice drives improved performance, then your inner drive should be the force to drive your deliberate golf practice.

Constant feedback is a must in deliberate practice as well. Correctly assessing your results and then continually adjusting how you practice will move you towards your improvement more rapidly. If you are going to dedicate yourself to practicing deliberately then it makes good sense to find a qualified golf instructor capable of providing you with constructive feedback, which should be central to your continued improvement program. Each day of golf practice should move you forward against an ever changing benchmark.

Remember that the goal isn’t just repeating the golf swing over and over again, but to realize that you can achieve higher levels of control over every aspect of your golf performance. You will never find practice boring if in every practice session you strive to do it as well as it can be done, every single time you do it.
